Kanawha County Could See More Restrictions Under New Color Designation

Kanawha County has moved from yellow to orange on the color-coded metric system used to determine school openings and closings in West Virginia. The map posted on the state Department of Health and Human Resources’ website lists the latest color categories for counties.

If Kanawha County’s color remained orange before the start of school, it would have a big impact. Gov. Jim Justice announced previously that schools will not open for-in person classes until their respective county gets to yellow or green. All teaching will be virtual for orange or red counties. Counties in orange can practice, but they can’t play games. Kanawha County previously had scheduled football scrimmage games for this Friday.

Orange is 10 to 24.9 coronavirus cases per 100,000 population and is based on a seven-day, rolling average for counties that have a population more than 16,000. Currently, there are two other counties listed in orange on the state map – Logan and Monroe. Logan previously had been in red.
