Pay Is The Problem

Prison and jail officials found themselves short-staffed by more than 1,000 people on the day after West Virginia’s governor declared a state of emergency…while calling out the National Guard to help man state lockups. The consensus?…pay will have to improve to solve the problem…behind bars. West Virginia’s jails saw 41,000 people spend at least a day in custody. Keeping enough staff to ensure safety in correctional facilities…costs the state $19 million dollars in overtime. They say it helped drive overworked corrections officers out of the system.
