Sissonville man’s trial is delayed until July

The trial for a man charged in connection to the murder of a woman whose body was found in a Sissonville well was continued Monday. Michael Smith’s trial was set to begin Monday, but has been pushed back because the state’s medical examiner was unavailable for the trial. Smith, as well as Virginia Smith, were charged with the first-degree murder of Cheyanne Johnson in May 2021. The two suspects are not related, but investigators previously said they were in a short-term relationship. Virginia Smith pleaded guilty in February 2023 as part of a plea agreement to testify against Smith. Michael Smith’s trial is now set for July 24 in front of Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge Ken Ballard.
