Charleston Police Chief Opie Smith announced Wednesday that he is retiring due to personal reasons. In a statement Smith called serving as chief “one of the greatest honors of my life.” Smith worked nearly 21 years as an officer before taking the chief’s position when Goodwin took office just more than a year ago. He replaced Steve Cooper, who retired after 24 years with the department. James “Tyke” Hunt was named Charleston Police Department’s new chief of police Wednesday in a ceremony where he was sworn in.
