DOH Announces New R Cut Intersection to Ease Congestion

The West Virginia Division of Highways officials said bids will open May 27 for the Oakwood Road intersection project on U.S. 119 in Kanawha County. Once the improvement project is finished, the intersection will have the first restricted crossing U-turn in West Virginia. The DOH said the restricted crossing U-turn, also known as an “R Cut” intersection design, allows for a safer and more efficient movement that will address the traffic issues in the two-mile long section of U.S. 119 that begins at MacCorkle Avenue to Emerald Road. The intersection at Oakwood Road previously had an afternoon wait time of three minutes. With the R-Cut, the wait should decrease to less than a minute and a half, according to the DOH. Work on the project was initially meant to begin this spring, but is now expected to start spring 2021.
