New Metric Helps Measure COVID-19 Infection Rate

As West Virginia wrestles with COVID-19 and how to bounce back economically while still protecting its people, the state’s coronavirus czar said there is another metric that officials are closely following – the R-naught. The R-naught, or R0, measures new infections that result from a single person. Dr. Clay Marsh, the state’s coronavirus czar, said that the state at one point over the weekend had the lowest rate in the country at .74. The number has increased slightly since then, but anything below zero is good. Looking at the metrics is helping guide state officials as they balance reopening the economy with protecting health.
