A Roane County elementary school student has been chosen as the winner of the statewide “When I Grow Up” essay contest. Piper Carmen, of Geary Elementary, was randomly selected as the winner in the annual contest. The West Virginia Treasurer’s office said Carmen’s essay was about being a nurse when she grows up. She will receive $5,000 in a SMART529 account. The event was held through Facebook Live this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
