An Influential Capitol Building Painter is Honored

A man who left his mark on state history has received one of West Virginia’s highest honors. Master painter Richard Withrow of the W.Q. Watters Co. was presented the Distinguished Mountaineer Award by Gov. Jim Justice for his personal contributions over the last six decades to the restoration of the state Capitol Building. Withrow also was invited to inscribe his signature alongside the original painters. Withrow has touched nearly inch of the Capitol building over the years, from painting corridors and offices to restoring paint in the Supreme Court and the Senate and House chambers. He started painting in 1960.
