West Virginia’s first lady is giving kids an opportunity to come up with an endearing name for the state. Cathy Justice is inviting students to participate in a Renaming West Virginia Essay Contest in honor of West Virginia Day. All eighth-grade students can write an essay in 500 words or less about what nickname they would choose for the state and why. The deadline to have the essay turned into the governor’s office is May 21 and winners will be announced June 1.
