The Kanawha County Commission is requesting a congressional inquiry about a recent presentation given to a local HIV task force that called the county’s HIV outbreak the most concerning in the country. Commissioners Kent Carper, Ben Salango and Lance Wheeler signed the letter that was sent to Sens. Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin. Last month, both senators announced more than $2.3 million in federal funds for HIV/AIDS prevention and medical treatment across the state. County Commissioners stressed urgency in the letter and asked for clarification about the investigation into the “rise” of HIV cases in the county. The letter ended with commissioners asking Manchin and Capito to open a congressional inquiry to the CDC into the matter.
