Police Aim To Increase Taser Certifications for Officers

Less than one-fourth of Charleston’s 162 police officers are currently certified to use Tasers, according to the city attorney’s office. Thirty-six officers are currently certified to use Tasers, leaving 17 of the department’s remaining working Tasers unused. The information was released following a Freedom of Information Act request by Eyewitness News. Charleston Police Chief James “Tyke” Hunt said in a news conference on April 30 that some officers’ certifications lapsed during the pandemic because the department had trouble finding an instructor. The police department previously has a certification/recertification course scheduled for May 2020. That has been rescheduled for June 2021.
