The CDC released its preliminary findings Thursday on a study of the HIV outbreak in Kanawha County. The CDC has been in Charleston studying the situation and meeting with health leaders. The CDC’s preliminary findings showed a high use of emergency department and inpatient services among people who inject drugs. The study also found that HIV testing was rarely conducted. The findings are based on over 60 in-depth interviews and field observations. The DHHR’s new Kanawha Valley HIV Testing Outreach Group has boosted HIV testing and provides counseling to those that need it. Final recommendations from the CDC will be made in August.
