SOAR stands for Solutions Oriented Addiction Response and the group used to run a needle exchange program until it was outlawed by the City of Charleston. SOAR volunteers still work toward harm reduction, even without the syringes, and they’re planning an event this Saturday at Magic Island Park to draw attention to their efforts. Organizers say 209 people will be wearing red t-shirts to form a human HIV SOS sign. Two hundred nine is the number of people who died in Charleston and Kanawha County in 2020. Saturday’s event will be held from 2 – 4 p.m. at Magic Island Park, and they’ll offer COVID-19 vaccinations as well as Naloxone.
