West Virginia’s charter school law is now in effect and the state is now allowed to have up to 10 charters, two virtual charters and a professional charter school board. Three charter schools were permitted prior to the law. WCHS TV reported West Virginia Academy could be the first charter school in the Mountain State. It’s awaiting approval from the state Supreme Court after it’s application was rejected by Monongalia and Preston County school boards. If approved, the plan is to begin with grades 2-8 and then expand to K-12 with a focus more on life skills kids will use beyond the classroom. If approved this summer, West Virginia Academy could open in Morgantown by fall of 2022.
