President Joe Biden has nominated former West Virginia health officer Dr. Rahul Gupta to become the next director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Gov. Jim Justice said the state was really happy with Biden’s selection. Gupta currently serves as the senior vice president and chief medical and health officer of March of Dimes. He first began his role in West Virginia as the director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and helped to oversee the county’s response to the 2014 water crisis. He then went on to serve as the state health officer and Commissioner for the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health from 2015-2018. As the state’s chief health officer, he helped lead the state’s opioid crisis response efforts and launched a number of pioneering health initiatives.
