Charleston police said some community events will be hosted as part of the annual National Night Out, when neighbors are asked to turn on outside lights and spend time outside with their neighbors and police. The event will be observed from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Many neighborhoods throughout Charleston will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anticrime rallies, according to a news release from the Charleston Police Department. Charleston/Kanawha Housing will be hosting National Night Out events vents at Jarrett Terrace, Washington Manor, Orchard Manor, South Park and Carrol Terrace. This is the 38th Annual National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. More than 17,000 communities are expected to participate.
