Jackson County Soldier Who Died in the Korean War Will Be Laid to Rest Friday

Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger spearheaded the effort to organize a hero’s welcome in Ravenswood last night as a soldier’s remains passed by. The sheriff said on social media that a plane carrying the remains of Korean War veteran and Army Cpl. Pete W. Conley of Chapmanville landed in Columbus, and then a military escort traveled back into West Virginia across the Ritchie Bridge and down Interstate 77 back to his home in Logan County. Conley was 19 when his unit was attacked in North Korea, and he was reported missing in action in December 1950. Conley’s remains were turned over by North Korea in 2018 and were identified in June 2020. His remains will be interred Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill. Evans Funeral Home in Chapmanville will hold a funeral service before the interment.
