Huntington Mayor Steve Williams is calling Monday’s flooding a ‘100-year rain event’ and the worst he has ever seen. Williams said at the state’s largest wastewater treatment facility in Huntington, the plant was pumping the standard 9,000,000 gallons at 3 p.m. By 6 p.m., it was pumping 49,000,000 which is enough to overwhelm any kind of system. Huntington’s water infrastructure has been getting more attention recently as the Huntington Water Quality Board has been calling attention to the fact that most of it has not been updated since the 1950s. Williams said Monday’s event put a giant exclamation point on the problem. Williams is hoping this will start a conversation about a strategic plan and possible pathways for more funding.
