Bus Driver Shortage Impacts Several School Districts

A shortage of bus drivers is hampering school districts across the state. Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander said this week they have only four substitute drivers and that can create problems covering normal runs. Mechanics who are certified to drive the buses have been filling in and current drivers have to take extra routes. WCHS TV said that means a bus could be running up to 30 minutes behind. Jackson County Schools are having similar problems. It takes fifty hours of training to become a bus driver and the pay in West Virginia is about $29,000 per year, according to Ziprecruiter. The state legislature just passed a bill with an extra stipend for bus drivers.
