Kanawha County commissioners have written letters to West Virginia’s two U.S. senators asking for help to battle high gas prices. The commissioners sent letters to U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-.W.Va., and U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., asking for the release of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve by the U.S. Department of Energy. Commissioners said the emergency fuel is needed to help reduce fuel costs. WCHS TV said the letter said people in Kanawha County and around the state can’t take on this additional cost due to high inflation, especially after experiencing job loss and business closures due to COVID. Commissioners said they believe the release of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve could provide some immediate relief.
