Boone County Hunter is Charged After Mistaking a Man for a Bear

A hunter in Boone County has been charged after officials said he shot a man after mistaking him for a bear. 70-year old Jimmy Castle has been charged after a man’s body was found in the Preston Branch area of Twilight. West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Sgt. Larry Harvey said Castle was hunting when he claimed he saw a bear in the distance. The figure was actually 30-year-old David Green who was root digging in a black shirt. Officials said Castle fired and didn’t see anything fall so he left. He came back later with someone else to help him look, but never found anything again and left. The next day, Green’s family reported him missing and a search party was launched. First responders found his body hours later with a gunshot wound. After hearing that a body had been found in the area he was hunting, DNR officers said Castle informed deputies at that time that he may have been responsible.
