Governor Justice said this week that his $48 million plan to recruit, train and retain nurses is expected to add 2,000 nurses to the mountain state over the next four years. But officials with the West Virginia nurses association say those frontline workers need help now. A spokesperson from the West Virginia Nurses Association said the group is working on ways to bring some of the 1700 nurses in WV who didn’t renew their license last year back to the bedside, like hiring non-medical staff to help with some lesser duties nurses have. WCHS TV reported lowering the amount of patients a nurse is responsible for each day is a possibility as well. But with staffing shortages still a major problem, and a spike in COVID hospitalizations expected after the holidays, the nursing shortage is not going to be a quick fix.
