A year after a West Virginia National Guard firefighter was killed in an Eastern Panhandle fire, a reward is still available for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the blaze. 30-year old Senior Airman Logan Young with the 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg, was fatally injured on Dec. 27, 2020, while working an arson fire at a vacant structure near Kearneysville. Investigators said the fire was one of two set in the early morning hours along Charles Town Road. The first fire was reported in the 7000 block of Charles Town Road. Young was killed while at the second fire reported in the 3800 block.
A news release from the state Fire Marshal’s Office said potential witnesses were seen riding ATVs in the vicinity of the fires at the time they were set. A motor vehicle was also seen in the area. Young was a resident of Martinsburg and a combat veteran who had previously deployed to the Middle East in 2014.
There is still a $23,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the firefighter’s death. Anyone with any information is urged to call the West Virginia Arson Hotline at 1-800-233-3473.
