A man accused of shooting and killing a woman and her unborn child in Boone County has been found incompetent to assist his attorney for trial. 30-year old Mitchell Hughes was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in October 2021 after Boone County deputies said he shot and killed 22-year old Ashley Goad and her unborn child outside a home in Comfort. After the shooting, Hughes allegedly stole a cruiser and led police on a chase into Kanawha State Forest before he was taken into custody. Hughes underwent a psychiatric exam where doctors found him incompetent for trial and a new hearing date has been set for April 20.
