Inmate’s Death is Under Investigation

An inmate died from apparent suicide Sunday at South Central Regional Jail. Lawrence Messina, spokesperson for the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security, said a 45-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell about 6 a.m. Sunday. Several officers and staff provided medical assistance until first responders arrived. The man was pronounced dead about 6:30 a.m. Messina said the death appeared to be a result of suicide, but an investigation by West Virginia State Police and corrections officials is ongoing.
