State Lawmakers Consider Lowering Sales Tax Rate

West Virginia House and Senate Democrats are advocating for a sales tax cut for this legislative session. Members of both chambers pitched the idea Tuesday. Right now, the state sales tax is 6%, which is the same as Maryland, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. It’s slightly higher than the rates in Ohio and Virginia. Democrats want a 1.25% reduction, knocking the sales tax down to 4.75%, which would be the lowest in the region. They said the price tag for that cut is $311 million – and that it would benefit every business and family in the state. For the bill to have a chance, the Republican majority would have to get on board. WCHS TV reported Senate Minority Leader Stephen Baldwin talked to leadership about placing the issue on a committee agenda.
