New Bill Would Ease Restrictions on Cameras in Classrooms

The West Virginia Senate passed a bill on third reading aimed at detecting abuse of students in special education classrooms. Sen. Eric Nelson, R-Kanawha, called it a “huge move forward.” Nelson said the bill improves on a state law that was passed in 2019 placing cameras in certain special needs classrooms and but would now allow administrators to regularly review the videos. Nelson referenced criminal investigations at Holz Elementary School and Horace Mann Middle School where teachers and aides have been charged with battery on students.
