Rand Man Facing Trial for Murder May Request a New One

A Rand man convicted of murder and other charges in a deadly shooting is expected to ask for a new trial. The development comes after the lawyer for Gerard Maxwell said a witness has now come forward claiming the shooter was somebody else. Maxwell was convicted in a bench trial of murdering Marian Chapman on the porch of a Rand home about three years ago. A motion filed by the defense said a new witness has come forward claiming he saw a skinny Black male – not Maxwell – shoot the victim more than four times. Maxwell is expected to use this claim to ask for a new trial even before he is sentenced May 5.
