Rebuild Process for Richwood Schools Sees More Delays

A school superintendent said skyrocketing construction costs will add at least six months to the timeline for Richwood schools to be replaced. The schools were destroyed by the 2016 floods, and construction bids have sent the six-year-long school replacement project back to the drawing board. WCHS TV said portions of the plans to build a $30 million replacement for flood-gutted Richwood schools at the site of the current Cherry River Elementary School were scrapped after the lowest bid came in $17 million more than expected. The project is still on, but the Nicholas County School Board’s rejection of the bids that were more than 50% over what was projected means a redesign is needed. There are also concerns that bids for other school replacements and consolidations will come in during the process.
