West Side Food Project Aims to Add a Grocery Store

A project on West Side has been teaming up with the Keep Your Faith Corporation and its partners since 2014 to grow frutis and vegetables and address a need for easier access to fresh and healthy food. Now the West Side “grown project” is expanding by creating a community grocery store in the old Park Place building on the corner of Central and Park Avenues. WCHS TV said the grocery store would promote healty eating and use the SNAP Stretch program to create job opportunities and provide counseling services to those in need. KYFC and the WV Food and Farm Coalition are seeking $366,000 from the city of Charleston’s American Rescue Plan funding to get the grocery store up and running. About $630,000 has been requested to expand the SNAP Stretch program. You can find a link to the full proposal here. City council is expected to vote on the funding request next month.
