Drug Maker Reaches $99 Million Settlement with West Virginia

West Virginia’s attorney general announced his office has reached a $99 million settlement with Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., an opioid drug manufacturer involved in a trial that has been taking place over the past two weeks in Kanawha County. Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said in a news release that he’s pleased with the settlement, and it’s more than double Janssen’s national settlement proposal of $48 million. West Virginia – and all its cities and counties – will receive a $99 million lump sum payment, within 45 days of approval by the state’s political subdivisions. The attorney general said the state currently has the highest per capita settlement so far and expects it to remain at the top once all trials and settlements are completed.
