School Enrollment Dips

Public school enrollment in West Virginia has gone down every year since 2014. According to the West Virginia Department of Education, there are 1,400 fewer students this year compared to last year. Funding for public schools is based, in part, on enrollment and fewer students means less funding through the state school aid formula. Kanawha County has the state’s largest enrollment by far with more than 24,000. This year, it had 380 less students than the year before. WCHS TV spoke with Superintendent Tom Williams, who cited competition with charter schools, private schools, Christian, online and those who want to home school. Kanawha County Schools is cutting 55 positions, as the school board navigates declining enrollment and tax revenue.
