Kanawha County Commission president, Kent Carper, addressed a panel of medical experts with the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday to urge them to distribute covid-19 booster shots for first responders in West Virginia. Medical experts, FDA officials and representatives from the Centers for Disease Control and some drug manufacturing companies met virtually to discuss potential updates to the covid-19 vaccine that would target some newer variants. Carper said first responders here locally need a second booster shot now, and he pressed the FDA to take action. Some medical experts said they expect another surge of covid-19 this fall, and Carper said he wants first responders to get a second booster before that happens.
