Charleston Man is Charged with Child Abuse

A Charleston man has been charged after he was accused of punching and hitting a child with a wooden kitchen utensil 38-year old Rufus Smith is charged with child abuse resulting in injury after an incident was reported on July 5, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court this week. Smith is accused of striking a child with a closed fist multiple times and then hitting the child in the head with a wooden rolling pin, according to the complaint. Police said the victim had injuries that were consistent with the accusations, including bruising, swelling, cuts and a ruptured eardrum. Smith is currently being held in South Central Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.
