Drugs in Jails Continue to Be an Issue

Overdose deaths inside West Virginia’s 10 regional jails are now the second leading cause of death. Only heart disease is killing more people, according to information obtained through open records requests and compiled by Eyewitness News. Former Kanawha County prosecutor Mark Plants told Eyewitness News that a former client used him to try and bring fentanyl into the South Central Regional Jail through papers that had been soaked in the drug and became powdery. As soon as Plants realized what was happening he notified a corrections officer and the case was turned over to West Virginia State Police and the case is still under investigation. There have been 22 confirmed overdose deaths due to drug and/or alcohol intoxication inside the jails since 2017. The Eyewitness News investigation found that of those deaths, 55% were within the first two days of incarceration.
