A federal judge ruled in favor of the drug distributors in a long-awaited decision Monday in the first lawsuit to go to trial over the U.S. opioid addiction epidemic. U.S. District Judge David Faber’s ruling means Cabell County and the city of Huntington, which had filed the suit against three major drug distributors – AmerisourceBergen Drug Co., Cardinal Health Inc. and McKesson Corp. – will receive nothing. Faber’s decison comes about a year after closing arguments, wiith the plaintiffs were seeking more than $2.5 billion for abatement efforts as part of a 15-year plan to reduce overdoses, overdose deaths and the number of people with opioid use disorder. The Cabell-Huntington lawsuit was the first time allegations involving opioid distribution ended up at federal trial and the result could have huge effects on similar lawsuits.
