Former Employee at Kanawha County Clerk’s Office Faces Embezzlement Charge

Court records said a woman who worked in the Kanawha County Clerk’s Office has been charged after she was accused of taking more than $21,000 that residents had paid in back taxes and using it for her own personal use. 44-year old Elizabeth Sampson of Elkview is charged with embezzlement. A criminal complaint said Sampson worked as a clerk in the office and collected payments for delinquent property taxes and took several payments from residents who paid in cash for back taxes. The complaint said Sampson admitted to taking more than $21,000 and using it for personal reasons and paying bills.
