DEP responds after CSX Train derailment in Summers County

Dispatchers said three people were taken to the hospital in Summers County after a train hit a boulder and ended up near the bank of the New River. The incident involving a CSX train was reported about 5 a.m. Wednesday near Sandstone. A statement from CSX said all four of the train’s locomotives and at least nine empty coal cars derailed. The three crew members – a conductor, an engineer and an engineer trainee – were in the lead locomotive and were able to escape when the train caught fire. They’re all being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An unknown amount of diesel and oil did leak from the derailed locomotives, and they’re taking environmental measures to contain any damage. A spill response unit that will coordinate with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection on cleanup efforts.
