Former state lawmaker faces sexual harassment allegations

A woman is suing a former Republican lawmaker in West Virginia and the state legislature over sexual harassment allegations. The woman, referred to as “Jan Doe” in court documents, is suing after she said she received sexual and personal messages from former Fayette County Del. Austin Haynes while she was working with him to get a bill passed. The lawsuit claims Haynes started sending Facebook messages to the woman saying he would introduce the bill if he was elected in 2020. He won the election, but did not introduce the bill. WCHS TV reported that Haynes is accused of sending multiple sexual and personal messages in January 2021 to the woman and that continued throughout the legislative session, despite her telling him she did not want them. The lawsuit also accuses Haynes of mentioning quid pro quo in relation to the legislation. Haynes was defeated in November by a Democrat – Elliott Pritt, a schoolteacher from Fayette County.
