More than 300 bills filtered through the Senate and House chambers during the 86th Legislature. Senate Bill 490, known as the Cassie Mari Johnson Memorial Act, received strong support from lawmakers and would increase penalties for anyone who causes the death of a police officer or first responder. Offenders would face a felony charge punishable by 15 years to life in prison. The measure is named after Charleston Patrolman Cassie Johnson who was shot and killed in the line of duty in December 2020. Justice has a period of 15 days (excluding Sunday) to make decisions regarding the legislation.
