Law enforcement officers will be out in full force March 3-19 enforcing the seat belt law during a Click It or Ticket campaign. The state Department of Transportation said in 2020, 47 percent of those killed in crashes in West Virginia were unrestrained. And 64 percent of total vehicle fatalities in West Virginia occurred in rural locations, compared to 36 percent in urban areas. The mobilization to enforce seat belt wearing is part of the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s year-long efforts, running ahead of the annual national Click It or Ticket campaign in May. Organizers said the state’s seat belt usage increased to 92.5% in 2022, but they want to push to see every person in every vehicle is correctly buckled up.
