The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is asking people to keep an eye out for spongy moths, an invasive species that feeds on trees. The eastern side of West Virginia is considered to be infested with spongy moths as it slowly makes its way from east to west. A WVDA report indicates a “dramatic increase” in the population of spongy moths in 2022. Still, the moths have been a century-old plague on the US timber industry, defoliating hardwood trees since the 1860s. Eyewitness News said today, 44 of 55 West Virginia counties are on spongy moth quarantine, meaning you can’t move logs out of those areas without it being inspected or a compliance agreement. So, if you see a spongy moth or spongy moth eggs, WVDA asks that you call 304-558-2212 and report it to them.
