Clay County Schools aim to regroup under new Superintendent

New Clay County Superintendent Philip Dobbins aims to turn things around after the district has faced challenges from low enrollment and layoffs. Dobbins told Eyewitness News the district lost population after the 2016 floods and that meant a loss of funding. A special circumstance review by the state in January showed financial problems and leadership issues, including using one-time COVID funding on salaries. For the past two elections the county levy has also failed putting a financial strain on the school system. Dobbins told Eyewitness New that tough decisions will have to be made and student achievement will remain a priority. Dobbins’ first board meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m.
