An Arkansas felon who escaped from work release is captured in West Virginia

A convicted child rapist who had been sentenced to life in prison before escaping a prison work detail in Arkansas has been arrested in West Virginia. U.S. Marshals said Samuel Hartman, who has been on the run for more than a year, was taken into custody at the Quality Inn in Lewisburg on Tuesday. Hartman escaped from his field maintenance crew assignment on Arkansas Highway 79 on Aug. 12, 2022. Two women who helped him escape were also taken into custody at the Lewisburg motel on Tuesday. One of the women is Hartman’s wife. Hartman was convicted of raping a child under the age of 14 in 2013 in Franklin County, Arkansas.
