Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin received Charleston Police Chief James “Tyke” Hunt’s resignation letter Thursday night and offered her thanks for his work to keep crime rates low during his tenure. Hunt said in the letter he was resigning for health and personal reasons, needing time to recover from surgery required to correct issues found by a MRI in April. The Charleston Interim Police Chief is Scott Dempsey who has worked with the department for 23 years. Once the former Chief Hunt recovers and returns to the force, he would assume the rank of lieutenant. Hunt was appointed to the chief’s position in Feb. 2020, after the retirement of Chief Opie Smith.
