South Charleston City Council voted this week to amend city code prohibiting residents from having bees or chickens within city limits. City code now has chickens and bees on the list of prohibited animals, which already includes cows, horses, goats, sheep, and many other animals. South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens said the majority of residents don’t want farm animals in the city. Eyewitness News held an online poll in February and asked if residents should be allowed to raise chickens and bees in city limits and 54% said yes. Mullens said he’s open to the idea of putting the issue on the ballot for a vote in 2026.
