The Public Service Commission of West Virginia granted the city of Philippi a petition that would require Alderson Broaddus University to show cause why electric, garbage, sewer and water services should not be terminated. City officials said the university defaulted on a deferred payment arrangement and owes the city $773,000. The authority to award degrees has been revoked and Alderson Broaddus must voluntarily resign its accreditation which will become effective at the end of 2023. According to 2020 tax filings, the university was at least $37 million in debt.
