PSC is waiting on survey results from several utilities as it monitors fire hydrants

The West Virginia Public Service Commission is trying to find out the condition of hydrants, but many water utilities aren’t responding to a survey. Eyewitness News reported that only half of the 301 utilities that were subject to the PSC’s order for a two-page surgery on fire hydrant maintenance replied. The results of the survey will help the PSC determine whether or not further action has to be taken. This survey comes after fire hydrants across the state did not have enough water to put out what firefighters considered small fires, resulting in huge losses. One of those fires in Edgewood resulted in the total loss of a historic home. West Virginia American Water owns those hydrants. The water company responded to the request by the PSC promptly with a 724-page document detailing their maintenance. Utilities are encouraged to send the surveys back to the PSC.
