Coal film earns a spot in the National Film Registry

A 1987 film based on the events of a coal miners’ strike in southern West Virginia has been selected to join the National Film Registry. “Matewan” is the story of the struggle between union miners and private detectives hired on behalf of the coal company in the town of the same name, and has been selected as part of the 2023 Library of Congress National Film Registry. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography following its release. There are 875 films in the registry.
