Indictments handed down in a 2022 prison death

Six employees at the Southern Regional Jail in Beckley have been indicted in connection with the assault and death of an inmate in 2022. Mark Holdren, Cory Snyder, Johnathan Walters, Jacob Boothe, and Ashley Toney were all named in an 18-count federal indictment. Lester was on duty March 1, 2022, and acting in his official capacity as a lieutenant at the Southern Regional Jail, according to the court record. Holdren, Snyder, Walters, and Boothe were on duty as corporals. Toney is listed as a correctional officer II. The indictment only names the victim as “Q.B” and describes him as a 37-year-old pretrial detainee in custody at the facility and housed in C-pod. Q.B. has been identified by family members as Quantez Burks who was assaulted by correctional officers while handcuffed. Court documents indicate the beating was punishment for an attempt to push past a jail guard. Those indicted are all due back in court for a Dec. 5 arraignment.
